Avoid Scams

If something feels wrong, hang up, then call us. We'll help you check. Call (860) 774-1243, Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM–2:00 PM.

Common scams

  • "Medicare" or "Social Security" calls

Callers say your card is suspended or you owe money. Real agencies mail letters first and never threaten you.

  • Grandparent scam

Someone says a grandchild is in trouble and needs money now, and asks you to keep it secret.

  • Gift card or wire payment

Any request to pay with gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency is a scam.

  • Computer pop-ups

A warning says your computer is infected and gives a number to call. Close it and don't call.

  • "Free" benefits offers

Callers promise money or benefits if you share your Medicare, Social Security, or bank number.

Red flags

  • They call, text, or email you first, out of the blue
  • They rush you or say it's an emergency
  • They ask for your Medicare, Social Security, or bank numbers
  • They want payment by gift card, wire, or cash pickup
  • They tell you not to tell anyone

What to do

  1. Hang up, close the message, or don't open the door.
  2. Never give numbers or money to someone who contacted you.
  3. Call us at (860) 774-1243, or a number you already trust.
  4. If you already paid or shared information, call your bank right away, then call us.
