SNAP (sometimes still called food stamps) gives you money each month on a benefit card that works like a debit card at grocery stores and many farmers markets.
WHO USUALLY QUALIFIES
Eligibility is based on your household size and income, and the rules are more generous for people 60 and older. For example, out-of-pocket medical costs can count in your favor. The only way to know for sure is to apply — many seniors who assume they earn too much actually qualify.
WHAT TO GATHER BEFORE YOU APPLY
- Proof of identity (driver's license or state ID)
- Proof of income (Social Security statement, pension, pay stubs)
- Proof of housing costs (rent or mortgage statement, property tax)
- Utility bills
- Medical bills and receipts, if you are 60 or older or disabled — these can raise your benefit
HOW TO APPLY
1. Call the center at (860) 774-1243. Our Municipal Agent to the Elderly helps you fill out the application, gather your papers, and submit it — at no charge. 2. You can also apply through the Connecticut Department of Social Services, which runs the SNAP program. 3. After you apply, there is a short interview, usually by phone.
You can also start right from our Benefits page — choose SNAP in the form and we will contact you to help you finish the application.
