Your Benefits Check-Up: What It Is and How to Use It

October 1, 2026 · Quinebaug Valley Senior Center staff

Many seniors qualify for help they have never heard of. Our free Benefits Check-Up on this website asks eight simple yes-or-no questions and shows programs worth looking into. It is anonymous — nothing you answer is saved unless you are signed in and choose to save it.

What it covers

  • Medicare Savings Programs — help paying Medicare premiums and costs. Medicare: 1-800-633-4227. Senior Resources (Area Agency on Aging): (860) 887-3561.
  • SNAP — help with grocery costs, with special rules for people 60 and older. CT Dept. of Social Services: (855) 626-6632.
  • Energy assistance — help with heating bills. Apply early; funds can run out. TVCCA energy assistance: (860) 425-6681.
  • Renter's rebate — money back each year for renters 65+ or totally disabled.
  • Veterans benefits — VA benefits: 1-800-827-1000.
  • Other help such as Medicaid, housing, and Social Security questions.

How to use your results

  • Your results are a guide, not a guarantee. Only the program itself can decide if you qualify.
  • Print your results — each one includes what the program is, who usually qualifies, what papers to bring, and who to call.
  • Tap "Get help applying" and our staff will contact you.

Papers that are good to have handy

  • Photo ID and your Medicare or Social Security card
  • Proof of income (Social Security letter, pension statements)
  • Recent bank statements
  • Rent receipts, utility or heating bills

Remember

Applying for real benefits is always free. If anyone asks you to pay to apply, it is a scam.
